How to Choose Your Perfect Photographer

How to Choose Your Perfect Photographer

Whether you’re looking for a photographer to do boudoir photos for you, to document your wedding day or hiring someone to capture your family memories, you want to be sure that you choose the right person for the job. And even though pricing often plays a big role in determining which photographer is right for you, that should only one of the factors you consider when making your choice.

Choosing to hire a professional photographer is an investment in preserving your memories. You’re not only paying someone to make beautiful pictures, you’re also trusting them to help you remember your life and to give you the gift of remembering what matters most to you. That’s why it’s so important to hire a photographer who understands you and what is important to you. If you choose the right person, you’ll end up with photos that are both beautiful and meaningful.

First, determine your budget

Before you even think about booking a photo session, you should have a clear idea of how much you can afford to spend on it. You might find a photographer you love, but the price tag for their services could be out of reach for you. Figuring out your budget before you start looking, can help you avoid that kind of disappointment. But just as important as knowing what you can spend, is realizing that price alone is not a good way to judge whether a photographer is the right fit for you. Anyone can set a high price for their services, but looking closely at a photographer’s work can tell you whether they have the experience and professionalism to warrant higher prices. On the other hand, if you simply look for the least expensive option available, you run the risk of truly getting what you pay for. Experienced and professional photographers who provide both amazing photos and fantastic customer experiences are often on the more expensive side. But did you know that many of these same photographers offer payment plans to help make the an amazing photographic experience more affordable? (It’s true– we do!)

Next, know what style of photos you want

Every photographer is different and has their own unique style. Are you drawn to more candid, photojournalistic images? Or do you love photos that are more posed and formal? Do you love bright and airy photos? Or does your taste run to dark and moody pictures?  Maybe you have your heart set on photos taken outside using only natural light? Or perhaps you’d prefer a studio setting. Before you start looking for the right photographer, make sure you have an idea of what kind of photos you’d like to receive after your photo session. This way you’ll be sure to find a photographer whose style fits your taste.

Always ask to view full galleries

Photographers always show their best photos on their websites and social media platforms, but if you want to get a really good idea of their skill and style, ask if you can view a full gallery from one of their sessions before booking. You certainly don’t need to request a full gallery from every photographer you’re interested in hiring, but if you’ve narrowed your choices down to a few awesome photographers, seeing these full galleries will only help you make an informed decision.

Never be afraid to ask questions!

When you’re hiring a professional photographer you shouldn’t ever hesitate to ask questions about packages, products, options, and anything else that comes to mind. A professional will be used to these questions and will have answers ready for you. If they’re not able to answer your questions, that’s probably a good clue that they’re not the right fit you.

And be sure to understand your rights

A professional photographer will always have you sign a contract before your session and part of this contract will tell you exactly what you are and aren’t allowed to do with your images. It may sound strange that this is standard practice for a photo session, but doing so makes sure that both you and your photographer agree on all the particulars before you get your photos taken. You should always talk to any potential photographer about whether you will be allowed to print your photos yourself or post them online after your session. And while most photographers allow you to use the photos from your session for your own personal use, it’s important to understand these specifics before you sign a contract.

Make sure you like your photographer!

Getting your photos taken, especially boudoir photos, requires that you both like and trust your photographer. And just like when you meet anyone, you can often immediately tell if you’ll end up liking your photographer and feeling comfortable with them or if they’re just not your cup of tea. If your photographer just doesn’t feel like a good fit for your personality, your session may be awkward or just no fun, and that’s the last thing you want! Take some time to get to know your photographer before your session and you’ll be able to rest assured that both your photos and your experience having them taken will be awesome!
