Don’t Freak Out, Mom…

So you’ve booked a boudoir session with me and you’re super excited. (I am too!) You’re getting ready for the big day, you’ve read all my advice about how to prepare, you’ve bought your fancy lingerie and you’re ready to go. And then you mention it in passing to your mom. What are boudoir photos, she might ask. You explain it to her and how you’re looking forward to celebrating your sensual side and feeling empowered by the process. Maybe you even send her my website to show her examples of the awesome photos you’re looking forward to having taken. And….silence.

There’s a pretty solid chance that your mom has never even heard of boudoir photos. She might even be a bit shocked by the level of openness and freedom she sees in the photos on my website. And she might be more than a little concerned about your choice to bare most of yourself to a camera. She might (gasp!) even ask you if this is some move to a different career. Will she see you in a late night pay-per-view movie option anytime soon? Ok, well maybe she wouldn’t go that far, but she might very well be concerned about the consequences of this very daring decision you’ve made. (*Clutches pearls in shock.*)

Boudoir photos are a relatively new offering in the world of photography. And while they might not be familiar to people of a different generation, I (obviously) think it’s fantastic that so many women are choosing to openly celebrate their sexuality instead of hiding it away. It’s a sign that times are changing, in a really healthy and beautiful way. So how to explain to your mother that your choice to do a boudoir photo session is not the first step to a new career in adult films? In all seriousness, I think that boudoir photos are an awesome way to educate people close to you about changing attitudes toward sensuality and sexuality. Choosing to hire a photograph to celebrate your strength, confidence and beauty isn’t anything weird or creepy. It’s an incredibly self-empowering choice that builds confidence, self-esteem and gives you an outlet to express an important aspect of the multi-faceted and beautiful person you truly are. Maybe after hearing your explanation and understanding the reasoning behind your choice, your mom might even wish that boudoir photos had been a thing when she was younger. Anything’s possible, right?
